TAIPEI (AFP) - The Nike+ 10K Human Race was launched to raise money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the World Wildlife Fund and the ninemillion.org campaign sponsored by the UN refugee agency (UNHCR).

The US sportswear giant estimates that more than one million people will take part in cities including Melbourne, Shanghai, New York, London, Madrid, Paris, Istanbul, Sao Paulo, Vancouver and Los Angeles.

Joining the Taiwanese president was Sung Yu-chi, who won a bronze medal in taekwondo at the Beijing Games.

"We raised about one million Taiwan dollars (317,400 US) in Taipei alone," a Nike official said, adding that the company will also donate an additional one million US dollars to the three charity groups.
