"They broke up over the holidays and have ended their engagement," a source close to the couple told People magazine. "They're both really sad about this. Even their friends are surprised; they seemed really happy. Everyone just wants the best for both of them."
Hewitt, 29, met Scottish actor McCall, 32, when he made an appearance on Ghost Whisperer. The two became engaged in November 2007 while vacationing in Hawaii, after a year of dating.
In October, speaking about her svelte looks, Hewitt alluded to a marriage telling People magazine:
"I'm getting ready to turn 30 and get married and all those things. This year was my year to try to glow from within and feel better."
Hewitt serves as both series lead and executive producer on CBS' Ghost Whisperer and also lends her face and clean-cut image as a spokeswoman to both underwear maker Hanes and cosmetics giant Proactiv.
