The couple has not been able to reconcile their differences over Madonna's desire to adopt another child and the amount of time they devote to their respective careers, reports the Sun exclusively.
"It's very sad. They were a great couple and brilliant parents. They just couldn't live together any more," a well placed source told The Sun.
A divorce has been on the cards for some time now.
"It wasn't a matter of 'if' but 'when'. They tried hard over the last few months but their fighting was getting out of control," the source adds.
The couple earlier settled to stay together till the completion of Madonna's currently underway Sticky and Sweet global tour early next year, but now Guy wants the divorce finalized before Christmas.
"A series of rows around Guy's 40th birthday last month were so bad that Madge ended up storming out of the house and Guy's had enough," says the source.
The couples want to go ahead with the divorce without a separation.
Guy has postponed the filming of his new movie Sherlock Holmes and flown back to England from France to break the news to his parents.
He is expected to clear out of the couple's Madonna owned London home and move into his own at Wiltshire.
Madonna and Ritchie married on December 22, 2000, in a Scottish castle.
