September 12, 2008 (Sawf News) - Sarah Palin bid farewell to her 19-year-old son Track and his fellow troops of the Army's 1st Stryker Brigade, Delta company, on Thursday, September 11 with a speech at a ceremony to mark the unit's deployment in Iraq in Fort Wainright, Alaska.
"As you depart us, your parents, your friends and family, if you allow for a few tears and (allow us) to hold you closer before you're gone," she said.
Track enlisted without taking permission from his parents.
"Track didn't ask our permission to sign up," Palin told People magazine in June.
"He's young, strong and smart and this is a good positive step for him," she added. "He gave up hockey to do this and I'm very supportive. I believe in the cause, and hope and pray we have a worthy cause."
Similarly, Track's father, Todd Palin, himself the son of an Army veteran, does not regret Tracks decision to enlist, but feels he could have picked a better branch to serve in.
Track's field duties will include guarding brigade leaders and operating the 19-ton, eight-wheeled Stryker armored combat vehicle which has a crew of 2 and can transport.9 personnel.
