September 4, 2008 (Sawf News) - Britney Spears, whose relations with her father, Jamie Spears, were less than cordial in the past, now unequivocally acknowledges his contribution in extricating her from a tail spinning lifestyle that could have killed her.
"My father saved my life. I probably wouldn't be here if it wasn't for him," Britney told Daily Star. "I've not always been a good daughter, but he basically gave up his job and his life to look after me at a time when I wasn't even sure I wanted to go on living. I owe him my life."
Jamie Spears, 56, was appointed Britney's conservator, along with attorney Andrew Wallet, after the 26-year-old pop star was forcibly hospitalized on February 1, 2008, for mental illness, following a stand off with the police during which she refused to return her toddlers, Jayden James (b. September 12, 2006) and Sean Preston (b. September 14, 2005) to the custody of her former husband Kevin Federline.
Britney's progress has been remarkable under Jamie's conservatorship. Instead of partying wildly, as she would do before her hospitalization, she spends time in the gym, occasionally chilling out by a pool side or on a beach. She dresses up a lot better than before, proudly flaunting her well toned body.
Her career is back on track. She has been nominated for three MTV VMAs for Piece of Me - MTV video of the year, Best Pop Video and Best Female Video.
She will kick off MTV Video Music Awards with a surprise act, it was announced Wednesday, September 3. She has also been spending a lot of time in the recording studio, working on a brand new album.
Britney's recovery has been assisted by a personal trainer, a chef, a lifestyle coach, self-help books and a booze counselor, all appointed by her father.
Jamie's own experience as a former alcoholic who put his life back on track probably helped him assist his daughter's recovery.
