Bristol is the 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate and Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.
On Monday, September 1, Sarah released a statement announcing that Bristol was five months pregnant and she intends to keep the baby and marry the father of her child. Later, Levi Johnston was identified as the baby's father by the press.
Speaking to reporters, Sherry Johnston denied speculation that the young couple is under pressure to marry, saying the two intended to marry even before they learnt that Bristol was pregnant.
Johnston, 18, attended alternative school Burchell High School, Wasilla, Alaska, last year and played hockey for the school team - Wasilla Warriors.
According to reports, Johnston describes himself on his MySpace page, currently offline, as a "[bleep]in redneck," admits he is in a relationship, but writes "I don't want kids."
A Palin family member claims the couple's romance and Bristol's pregnancy was not a secret amidst the family.
"They kind of let everyone know [last May] and word traveled quick," the relative says. "We were surprised, but everyone is positive."
