September 1, 2008 (Sawf News) - Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, is five months pregnant. She intends to keep the baby and to marry the father of her child. John McCain was aware of the pregnancy when he picked Palin as his running mate.
In a statement issued to Reuters Monday, September 1, Palin said:
"We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us.
"Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support."
The statement is expected to quell internet rumors that Sarah's four-month-old son, Trig, who was born with Down syndrome, is actually her grandchild and she faked her recent pregnancy as a cover up for Bristol's.
Responding to the Palin statement, Democratic party nominee Barack Obama issued a statement saying the pregnancy issue should be 'off limits' during the campaign.
"Let me be as clear as possible," Obama told reporters. "I think people's families are off-limits, and people's children are especially off-limits. This shouldn't be part of our politics. It has no relevance to Gov. Palin's performance as governor or her potential performance as a vice president."
Palin, 44, is opposed to abortion.
