March 28, 2008 (Sawf News) - The French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, and his wife, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, visited 10 Downing Street in London to meet with Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his wife Macaulay.
Dismissing an innuendo laden question from a French journalist on the "very flattering positive comments" about the French First Lady in the British press, President Sarkozy, 53, told a joint press conference with Gordon Brown, "I think it was well deserved,"

"I am very happy to see that justice was done to her."
Referring to the negative coverage she received in France, he said "Everyone has seen that she is a woman with convictions, sensitivity and humanity and it's her convictions, this sensitivity, this humanity, which make up Carla's elegance."

Her colorful past not withstanding, Carla's public posture on the state visit has been perfectly calibrated to be demure and picture perfect.
To the delight of the British press and public she is making an extraordinary effort to conform to the sensibilities of the host nation, down to the smallest styling detail. She wore a grey suit under a deep lilac double breasted long coat and once again chose to wear flats. She left her hair open, not unlike a working woman would do.

Carla joined Sarah Macaulay for a luncheon with 150 high-profile women at London's Lancaster House to support the White Ribbon Alliance charity, which campaigns on maternal mortality. Carla is a patron of the group.
Addressing the women, Carla said, "One of the great tragedies of our time takes place in the shadows, particularly in developing countries when the most intense and wonderful moment of their lives - labor - might result in tragedy."

Sarah congratulated Carla on her marriage to Sarkozy and said: "I think we can expect great things of Nicolas, with you at his side."
