During the show hosted by comedian Jimmy Kimmel, a look alike of Britney's estranged husband (FedEx) was lowered from the ceiling, packed in a box and then dropped into the harbor.
"A whole school of fish just got pregnant," Kimmel said.
A source told People how Britney reacted to the skit. "Britney was blindsided and upset. Some (of Spears's associates) were with her, and they were pissed."
Spears appeared on stage minutes after the skit as a surprise presenter for the favorite female artist in the soul/rhythm & blues category. Her face betrayed no consternation and she smiled and waved at the audience as usual telling them, "I'm so happy to be here."
Jimmy Kimmel defended the skit on Wednesday saying, "I knew they wouldn't mind because I know they both have great senses of humor."
