Mumbai: April 19, 2005/Sawf News Service/ -- Thanks to designers like Shaina N C and Pallavi Jaikishan, sarees are seeing a huge comeback on the Indian fashion scene. “The saree is simply a statement of elegance. It is the world’s oldest garment for women and is still glamorous and rich though it is ‘unstitched’. Its six yards show a woman in her best, sensual and dignified avatar,” say top models and stars, who are anxious to wear the saree in infinite new ways spawned by designers. Today, there are women like Shaina N C and Kalpana Shah who have made a career of draping the saree in innumerable fascinating ways. Shaina uses several colours, chunnis and different choli shapes to bring a rare freshness to her sarees.
Kalpana Shah has mastered all the ways the saree is worn in India – from tribal to metro city areas – and has become the chief draper of sarees to many film stars including Aishwarya Rai. She was the star behind the star in Devdas, in which Aishwarya wore Bengali sarees in sexy ways! After Manish Malhotra created a stunning collection of sarees for Hema Malini in Baghban, Indian women have reinvented the saree in a big way. Sushmita Sen made the saree sexy in Main Hoon Naa. Rekha, Hema and Dimple – and younger stars like Priyanka Chopra – have worn the saree to advantage. And now, Demi Moore is so enchanted with the six-yard garment, that she is globalising the saree in a big way!
