The other nominees for the award were Miley Cyrus for 7 Things, Katy Perry for I Kissed A Girl, Jordin Sparks for No Air, Taylor Swift for Teardrops on My Guitar.
The only males nominated in the category, and also the only foreign act, the band had not expected the win.
Speaking to MTV before the awards, Band frontman Bill Kaulitz said:
"We don't expect it, so for us, it's so cool to be nominated. I think it's really, really special for us — it's America and it's our first American award, and that's so huge."
The award was announced by Lauren Conrad and Chace Crawford.
