September 3, 2008 (Sawf News) - Britney Spears will kick off the MTV Video Music Awards with a surprise act, which will not be a musical performance.
"MTV has long played an important role in my career. How can I not be there to kick off their 25th VMAs?" Britney said in a statement to People. "I'm excited to open the entire show, to say hi to my fans and to be nominated."
MTV Networks Music President Van Toffler stressed the surprise element of Britney's performance saying:
"Britney has done everything from perform with a snake, lock lips with Madonna and prove that what happens in Vegas doesn't always stay in Vegas. (A reference to her sleep walk on stage in Vegas at 2007 MTV VMAs)
"I can't wait to see what she does to kick off this year's show."
Britney has been nominated for three MTV VMA this year for "Piece of Me": MTV video of the year, Best Pop Video and Best Female Video.
Britney has never won a VMA despite 16 nominations in her career.
The VMAs air live on Sunday, September 7 at 9 p.m. ET/PT from Los Angeles.
