London, Oct 19: While the most influential and mimicked statements on style are said to have come from films, not the catwalk, only a few Hollywood personalities can actually be credited for influencing it the way actor Cary Grant did.
A panel of fashion experts in the latest issue of men's lifestyle magazine, GQ have released a list of great men’s clothing in films, declaring Cary Grant's tailored gray, ventless, three-button suit as worn in the 1959 Alfred Hitchcock thriller North by Northwest as the winner for the best suit in film history, reports the Daily Mail.
The list, compiled by GQ, found that Grant’s suit was “arguably the most legendary in the history of American cinema,” claiming that it is neither catwalks nor the street, but the big screen that immortalizes male style.
According to GQ’s Style Editor Adam Rapoport, the British actor’s suit was widely copied by Tom Cruise in Collateral, Ben Affleck in Paycheck and by thousands of men internationally.
Stylish suits worn by John Paul Belmondo in Breathless and Frank Sinatra in the original Ocean's 11, both made in 1960, were also cited as other classics, as they came in second and third in the list respectively.
The list of top 25 films that GQ magazine thinks has most influenced male fashion over the past 50 years are:
