'Jaane Tu…' opening impressive in India, not so impressive in US

July 8, 2008 (Sawf News) - Imran Khan's debut film Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na has made a spectacular opening in India with 100% box office collections over the weekend. However, audiences in the US were less excited about the film, suggesting that the film's appeal may be limited to the very young.

At first glance, the film's US box office collections over the 3 day Fourth of July weekend look unimpressive at $205,203, but that is because the film was released in just 33 theatres across the country. The average per theatre collection of $6,218 looks more impressive.

In comparison, this year's best Bollywood performer so far, Race, collected an average of $8,356 from 96 theatres.

One possible reason why Jaane Tu… has not matched the performance of Race is because the film does not appeal to audiences across age groups. There just aren't that many Indian origin High Schoolers and Undergrads in the US. An overwhelming majority of Indians in the US are over 25-year-old.

Whether the limited appeal of the film adversely impacts its domestic box office collections in the coming weeks is moot, but the fact that it opened at 100% would make any such impact inconsequential.
