April 11, 2008 (Sawf News) - Kajol and Tanisha's father, and Tanuja's estranged husband, director and producer Shomu Mukherjee, 65, passed away on Thursday morning, April 10, following a heart attack. He had been unwell for sometime.
He lived alone and he died at his residence. He was cremated at Santacruz, Mumbai the same day.
Shomu, was the youngest son of Filmalaya Studios founder Sashadhar Mukherjee and brother of actors Joy Mukherjee and Deb Mukherjee.
Tanuja and Shomu met during the making of Shomu's first production film Ek Baar Muskara Do (1972) starring Joy Mukherjee and Tanuja. They got married in 1973 and the couple had two daughters, Kajol and Tanisha.
In 1973 he made his directorial debut with Nanha Shikhari, and made a number of films subsequently without getting much success. His last film Sang Dil Sanam (1994) starring Salman Khan and Manisha Koirala did not do well either and he quit making films. Amongst the Bollywood fraternity that attended the funeral were Shammi Kapoor, Karan Johar, Bappi Lahari, Ashutosh Gwarikar and Maushmi Chatterji.
The entire Mukherjee clan was present, including Rani Mukerji, who is the daughter of Shomu Mukherjee's cousin Ram Mukherjee.
